The best camera is the one you have with you.

Creative Practice: Trying to to take photos of ice crystals on car window while the car was moving at night with my iphone in single digit temperatures.

Tonight I said good bye to my sister, brother-in-law, and my adorable twin nephews.  It was very cold and I am ready to go home, but I will miss them.  I really do not like having them on the other side of the country.

For those of you from places with weather more inclement than San Diego, I apologize for my weirdness in advance.  Fleeting moments of icy beauty are not a normal part of my life in Southern California. As we climbed into the rental car, I noticed the most beautiful ice crystals that had formed from the condensation that had occurred a few hours earlier as we went to pick up Jimmy Johns for dinner.  The snow had been falling all day, and continued after our trek out.  Temperatures dropped even further.  When we got in the car, there was the most beautiful formation of ice crystals.  The picture does not even do it justice.  The beauty that nature creates all around us keeps me in awe, and humbles me as a creator.  I spent the last ride back to the hotel trying to capture the beauty of those crystals.  It reminded me of the saying you hear amongst photographers, “The best camera is the one you have with you.”  I wished I had a snazzy camera with me, but I didn’t.  I went with the camera I had.  I took so many pictures.  This is the last one I snapped right before I jumped out of the car and made a mad dash for the hotel lobby.  Did I mention it was cold?

You cannot see the detail in this photo I would like.  I’m not even sure it would have made a difference if I did have a fancy camera.  It was awfully cold to sit and try and capture it.  Well, it was cold for a person who lives in a place that stays around seventy degrees year-round.  It’s like so many fleeting moments of beauty; There for a moment and gone.  As artist, we can only hope to mimic nature’s splendid beauty, but that seems like goal enough to keep me busy this whole lifetime.
